5,000 marks from 1939

The new 5,000-mark note was issued in May 1940. There were two suggestions for the picture: a view from Koli and J.V. Snellman. The portrait was chosen, and Snellman became the first Finn to get his picture on money. The portrait was painted by the artist Signe Hammarsten-Jansson, and the banknote was designed by the artist Aarne Karjalainen.
