Crossbow

The crossbow has a wooden tiller, reinforced with both iron and bone inlays. The prod and stirrup are made of metal, and the string was originally made of moose sinew. On the top of the tiller, next to the string, there is a recess with a bony roller nut.

When spanning the string, the crossbowman would place one foot in the stirrup and use the pulley to pull the string into the roller nut, which locked the string in place. Underneath the tiller is a long iron trigger. The bone inlay below the tiller bears the date 1646. The crossbow was obtained for the collections of the National Museum of Finland from Maaninka in 1904. K4340:297
