In a cradle 1884
The painting shows a view of a peasant’s cottage. A mother sitting by the window is playing with a small child lying in a cradle. In the background, three prints are painted on the wall of the room. One of the pictures shows a painting by Albert Edelfelt in which Duke Charles is defaming the body of Klaus Fleming. The second picture shows Elias Lönnrot and the third Emperor Alexander II. Elias Lönnrot had died the year the painting was completed (1884) and Alexander II three years earlier. The image of the emperor is accompanied by a black mourning cross. Oil painting, 58 x 74.5 cm.
