Pehr af Bjerkén was a Swedish doctor and surgeon who worked for a short time in Finland as a military physician in 1789–1790 and later as an army doctor during the Finnish War 1808–1809. Bjerkén was the most competent Swedish surgeon of his time. He was a proficient practitioner and a skilled surgeon who also dared to successfully perform previously unknown surgeries. The miniature depicts a young Pehr af Bjerkén. The miniature is neither signed nor dated, but according to the design of the clothes and wig, the painting dates to the 1780s.
