Open Gardens Day
The Seurasaari Open-Air Museum is participating in the Open Gardens theme day. On the guided tour at 12 pm (in Finnish), you’ll have the chance to learn about traditional plants and the history of gardening by engaging your senses. Free admission!
At the Iisalmi parsonage, you can explore a kitchen garden designed according to 18th-century principles. During the Age of Utility in the 1700s, kitchen gardens became common in parsonages and manors. In parsonages where gardening was a central activity, priests shared their knowledge with the public through their example.
All the plants in the garden are heirloom plants, some of which are old varieties from historical parsonages and gardens. The garden also preserves plant varieties included in the National Genetic Resources Programme.
The garden features eight planting beds: Church Bouquets, Fragrant Garden, Parsonage Medicinal Herbs, Juhani Aho's Childhood Garden, Asparagus Bed, Rhubarb Bed, Garden Strawberry Bed, Sweet Cicely Bed, and Good King Henry Bed.
You can learn more about the garden's plants using the plant folder available at the Iisalmi parsonage or enjoy a peaceful rest and picnic while soaking in the garden's atmosphere and scents.
On Open Gardens Day, 5 July, a guided tour in Finnish open to everyone will be held in the garden at 12:00 pm. Admission to the tour and the garden is free.
