CLOSED: The First markka 1556

The National Museum of Finland has acquired a rare specimen of the first markka coin minted in Finland, dating back to 1556.

Previously there was only one known specimen, in the collection of the Royal Coin Cabinet in Stockholm. The existence of the second specimen became generally known in 1984, when it was sold in a numismatic auction in Stockholm to a collector, from whom it was purchased by The National Museum of Finland.

The National Museum is open to the public on Independence Day, November 6, from 11 am to 6 pm.
