The city that flourished and died. An exhibition of the life and abrupt destruction of this historical city is coming to the Maritime Museum of Finland and Kymenlaakso Museum on 31 March 2023.

Escape from Pompeii brings an internationally successful exhibition to Kotka. The exhibition tells of the destruction of the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as the everyday lives and fates of their residents. The exhibition also shines a spotlight on the rarely told story of a daring sea rescue and attempt to save the cities’ residents from massive destruction when the volcano Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.

The ash that buried the two cities and their residents ensured that Pompeii is one of the best-reserved archaeological sites in the world, continuing to provide us with more information about the Roman Empire today.

The exhibition showcases the last moments of the two cities: approximately 160 original items from the museums of Naples and the collections of the National Museum of Finland, residents buried under ash, marine archaeological findings, jewellery, murals, sculptures and everyday items.

The Escape from Pompeii exhibition was produced by the Italian Expona and Contemporanea Progetti in collaboration with the National Museum of Finland, and it is implemented as a collaboration between the Maritime Museum of Finland and Kymenlaakso Museum. The exhibition is based on an exhibition concept designed for the Australian National Maritime Museum.

The exhibition will be on display at Maritime Centre Vellamo in Kotka from 31 March to 1 October 2023.
