Changes to the site of the museum
The new annex of the National Museum will be implemented on the museum's current site, largely underground, where the extension will be combined with the historical main building. The new restaurant pavilion opens museum's yard for daily use.
A new passage from Mannerheimintie has been punctured into the stone wall surrounding the courtyard park of the National Museum. In the future, access to the museum will take place directly from Mannerheimintie or Museokatu. This will also improve the accessibility of the courtyard park, the new museum restaurant and the museum complex. In addition to the event area there will be public space for gatherings and hanging out, and the formal garden in the southern part will be preserved in its entirety.
Preservation of the formal garden
The rows of trees bordering the museum garden are protected in the local detailed plan and they will be renovated taking into account the condition of the trees. The trees are managed in such a way that their landscape, cultural-historical and plant species significance is preserved.
A significant part of the northern side of the courtyard park will be preserved, as 90 per cent of the new building will be located underground. The deck structure covering the underground spaces of the new part is sufficient for planting.
Renewed tram stops and a wall
The accessibility of the National Museum and the courtyard park will improve when the entrance to the museum will be from two directions in the future. Trams will continue to stop on Mannerheimintie, the stop will be extended and the pedestrian crossing will be moved further north.
The new transport connections will bind the National Museum of Finland and its courtyard park more closely to the whole of Töölönlahti's cultural, event and entertainment buildings.
- The formal garden in the southern courtyard will be protected and beautified with a new conservation decision.
- There will be racks for about a hundred bicycles at the entrance to the National Museum and in the courtyard park.
- The parking lot will be removed, the event area of the yard park will be expanded.
- The tram stop at the National Museum will be extended and moved slightly to the north. The pedestrian crossing leads directly to the courtyard park of the National Museum, and the complex is seamlessly connected to the Töölönlahti cultural centres.
- Access to the National Museum wall will be opened from Mannerheimintie to the courtyard park.
- Most of the yard park will remain in open use.
