National Urban Park
National Urban Park
Established in 2014, the Kotka National Urban Park comprises 2,400 hectares of diverse nature and impressive historic architecture. The buildings surrounding the Langinkoski imperial fishing lodge and the lush protected forest around the river are part of this award-winning park.
A tree species park, established in 1959, is also located on the south side of Langinkoski. Established by Metsähallitus, the park was planted with seedlings of twenty different tree species, including Douglas firs, sugar maples, elms and linden trees.
Nature reserve
The Langinkoski imperial fishing lodge is surrounded by rich and ancient nature. The importance of the area as a recreational destination for tourists and local residents and as a preserver of unique nature was recognised decades ago, and Langinkoski was protected as a nature reserve by decree in 1960. As an exceptional cultural and historical site, it is also part of various conservation networks.
Langinkoski is an area where you are free to go hiking, walk your pets, spend time and exercise. The area is open 24 hours a day, all year round, to anyone who wants to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.
Fishing
The fishing history of Langinkoski predates the imperial history by centuries. Langinkoski's fish catches have been famous both for their large salmon and for the abundance of catches. Traditionally, the rapids were used for dam fishing, known as vata fishing, for which dam structures can be seen on maps dating as far back as the 16th century.
The history of fishing has always been one of pleasure as well as benefit. The most famous sport fisherman of Langinkoski is probably the Russian Emperor Alexander III, who was known to have his own fishing rock downstream. Many species of fish, such as salmon, sea trout and whitefish, still thrive in the lake. Today, the only fishing allowed is fly-fishing.
Fishing in Langinkoski is possible only after purchasing a fishing permit. You can purchase the permit at eraluvat.fi.
