Vyshyvanka Day on 18 May at the National Museum

Welcome to celebrate Vyshyvanka Day at the National Museum! The pop-up exhibition Vyshyvanka and the Power of Ukrainian Craftsmanship will be open until 15 October, and the museum’s Central Hall will have a vyshyvanka installation on display on 18–21 May.

The National Museum has cooperated with Ukrainians living in Finland and the Embassy of Ukraine previously as well, such as in organising children’s summer camps in 2022. Now, by celebrating Vyshyvanka Day, we want to introduce the cultural heritage of Ukraine – its holiday and craftsmanship traditions – to the general public.

In the vyshyvanka installation displayed in the Central Hall of the National Museum, dozens of vyshyvanka shirts from Ukrainians serve as a reminder of the importance of cultural heritage for people and identity. Ukrainians living in Finland have lent their own vyshyvanka shirts to the installation and set up the installation together with the museum’s employees.  The installation will be on display on 18–21 May.

The pop-up exhibition next to the museum shop features Ukrainian textiles decorated with embroidery from the collections of the National Museum of Finland.

Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated in Ukraine and over a hundred other countries around the world on the third Thursday of May. The tradition of celebrating Vyshyvanka Day started in Ukraine in 2006 on the initiative of students. It became an official holiday in 2015 and has since been adopted by numerous communities and institutions in Ukraine and internationally.

There will be free admission to the entire museum on Thursday, 18 May in honour of International Museum Day; admission to the pop-up exhibition is always free!
